About Department of Floriculture


Introduction

Jammu and Kashmir is a Union Territory in Northern India located mostly in the Himalayan Mountains. The two major regions of Jammu and Kashmir are Jammu & Kashmir Valley all of which are rich in natural landscapes. Jammu region is comprising of plains, mountains and foot hills having different Agro Climatic Zones and other bounteous natural advantages. Keeping in view the tourist oriented economy of the State, Department of Garden, Parks & Floriculture was created by the then State Govt in 1969 under the control of Prof. K. N. Koul to look after floriculture related activities in the State. Till 2007, there was one Directorate of Floriculture but in 2007 separate Directorate for Jammu Division was established to promote floriculture in this Division. The Department of Floriculture Jammu is presently maintaining more than 191 No of Parks/Strips covering approximately an area of approx. 115 ha including Bagh-e-Bahu Gardens, Jammu. Besides this, the Department is promoting Commercial Floriculture under various Centrally Sponsored Schemes.

Objectives

The objectives of the Floriculture Department are manifold.

  1. To develop the open spaces and maintaining the existing parks.
  2. To enchance production and productivity of flower crops to raise the socioeconomic status of small and mariginal farmers.
  3. To bring diversification in Floriculture sector by focusing on cut flowers under protected cultivation and under open conditions.
  4. To successfully implement various centrally sponsored schemes in Jammu Division for the benefit of farming community.
